Substituting for y in the previous expressions and simplifying, we see x + ⅔ y − 11 ghosts = ⅓(7x − 11) ghosts, and ⅓ y ghouls = ⅓(2x + 11) ghouls. Then, substituting for y in the equation 3x + y = 51 yields 3x + 2x + 11 = 51 → 5x + 11 = 51 → 5x = 40 → x = 8. So, there are now ⅓(7x − 11) = ⅓(7(8) − 11) = ⅓(56 − 11) = ⅓(45) = 15 ghosts.
