Allan Yuan, a 13-year-old eighth grader from Hoover, Alabama, won the Countdown Round by answering this question in 6 seconds: “From a group of 9 students, three separate teams are to be formed—one consisting of 2 students, and one consisting of 4 students. If each student must be on exactly one team, how many distinct sets of three teams are possible?”

Congratulations to Evan Fan, Rithik Gumpu, Maitian Sha and Alexander Wang and coach Marybeth Gakos for earning the highest score in the Written Competition! They each earned a $2,000 scholarship and a trip to U.S. Space Camp. Washington won 2nd place, and Texas won 3rd place.

Team members Haley Blair, Madelyn Benjaminson, Mason Corey and Luca Lentini each won a $1,000 scholarship for their creative video about a stressed high school theater director who needs to replace a missing prop. The team, as well as their coach Edward Heil are from Woolwich Township, NJ.

The Countdown Round took place at the Renaissance Washington DC Downtown Hotel at 10am ET on Monday, May 9. The top 12 scorers from the Written Competition raced against the clock and each other to determine the 2022 Raytheon Technologies MATHCOUNTS National Champion.
