Pitsco Education supports math club programs for U.S. middle school students through in-kind donations

ALEXANDRIA, VA (August 6, 2009) -- MATHCOUNTS, a non-profit mathematics educational foundation (www.mathcounts.org), today announced that Pitsco Education will be a national sponsor for the 2010 program year. MATHCOUNTS is the only nationwide enrichment, club and competition program specifically for middle school math students and reaches over 250,000 middle school students in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, Department of Defense and State Department schools worldwide.

The MATHCOUNTS Club Program, currently in its third year of existence, is a math enrichment initiative providing the structure and activities needed to encourage the formation of math clubs within schools. Upon request, schools receive free problem sets and group activities. The activities provided for the Club Program foster a social atmosphere, and there is a focus on students working together as a club to earn recognition and rewards. This program year, Pitsco Education is providing an in-kind donation of meeting activities in support of the MATHCOUNTS Club Program.

“Pitsco Education’s generous donation is providing hands-on meeting activities for thousands of math clubs," says Lou DiGioia, Executive Director of MATHCOUNTS.  "Through the MATHCOUNTS Club Program we hope to make math fun and exciting and inspire more students to choose math and science fields in college and beyond.”

“Pitsco Education is proud to be involved with the efforts of the MATHCOUNTS Foundation to show students that hands-on applications of math can be fun and educational at the same time,” noted Pitsco Education President Lisa Paterni. “Putting math in an age-appropriate, real-world context is key to capturing the attention of middle school students.”

By engaging students at the critical middle school age, MATHCOUNTS programs build foundations in critical thinking and problem solving that help our students succeed in the classroom and later in life.

MATHCOUNTS is America's only nationwide enrichment, club, and competition program that motivates and rewards middle school students for math achievement. More than 7000 schools participate in MATHCOUNTS Programs annually from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Department of Defense and State Department schools worldwide. MATHCOUNTS currently distributes free resources to over 48,000 middle schools.

A 501(c)(3) organization, funding for MATHCOUNTS comes primarily from its National Sponsors; Raytheon Company, National Defense Education Program, Northrop Grumman Foundation, National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation, ConocoPhillips, Pitsco Education, Texas Instruments Incorporated and 3M Foundation.  MATHCOUNTS was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, CNA Foundation and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
